How to Calculate Your Handicap Index 

Your Handicap Index reflects your golfing ability. Here’s an easy way to understand how it’s calculated: 

Step 1: Play & Record Scores 

  • Play at least 3 rounds (54 holes)
  • Make sure the courses have a Course Rating and Slope Rating (these measure difficulty). 

Step 2: Calculate Score Differential 

For each round, use this formula:

Where: 

  • Adjusted Gross Score: Your actual score, adjusted for unusually high hole scores. 
  • Course Rating: How tough the course is for a scratch golfer. 
  • Slope Rating: How tough the course is for an average golfer. 
  • 113: Standard slope used in the formula. 

Step 3: Take Your Best Scores 

  • Once you have 20 rounds, pick your best 8 differentials
  • If you have fewer than 20, pick the best ones you have. 

Step 4: Calculate Handicap Index 

  • Average those best differentials and round to the nearest tenth. 
  • That number is your Handicap Index
