Golf Setup Is Everything: Improve Your Swing, Distance, and Accuracy

by Coach Jeremy

Every swing flaw I fix with students can usually be traced back to one place first: the setup. In our golf coaching sessions, we often find that improving a player’s address position creates immediate improvements in contact, distance, and consistency.
Every swing flaw I fix with students, I trace back to one place first: the setup. Specifically, where your pressure sits on your feet before you ever move the club. It sounds too simple to matter this much, but it’s usually the real reason behind problems players think are happening somewhere else entirely.

Poor vs. Good: It Starts at Address

Picture two golfers at address. One has let their weight more toward their toes. The other is centered, grounded through the middle of the foot. From the outside, the difference looks small. Biomechanically, it’s everything.

When pressure shifts onto your toes at address, your center of mass moves forward and creates instability before the swing even begins. Understanding center of pressure in the golf swing is one of the simplest ways to improve strike quality, distance, and club delivery.

Your body senses it immediately, even if your conscious mind doesn’t, and it starts making compensations before the club ever leaves the ball. That instability doesn’t stay put. It travels straight into your backswing, and from there into your transition, your impact position, and your ability to repeat the swing under pressure.

The swing doesn’t start when the club moves. It starts the moment you settle into your stance.

Poor Stability, Poor Load

Here’s the chain reaction I see over and over:

  • Toes take the pressure → base becomes unstable
  • Unstable base → limited ability to load into the trail side
  • Limited load → less coil, less stored energy, less power on the way down
  • Less power on the way down → compensations creep in – early extension, arms taking over – just to manufacture speed the body couldn’t store properly in the first place

An unstable base caps how much you can load on the backswing. You can’t turn fully and stay balanced around your trail leg if you’re already leaning forward before you start. It’s like trying to load a spring while it’s tipping over. The body protects itself – it shortens the turn and holds back instead of powering through. Players in this position often feel like they’re trying hard and still not getting distance, and that’s frustrating, because the effort is real – it’s just being spent fighting balance instead of building power.

Great Stability, Great Load

Flip it around, and the payoff is just as direct. A steady, centered base lets you create real load around the trail side – the coil that produces effortless-looking power, where the ball jumps off the face because the body did its job in sequence.

When your pressure is centered at address, your hips and shoulders are free to turn fully against a stable lower body. You get depth in the backswing without losing your spine angle, and a true weight shift into the trail leg instead of a sway. Because the base never had to compensate, the downswing sequence – hips, then torso, then arms, then club – can fire in the right order. This is the difference between players who look like they’re swinging hard and players who look like they’re barely trying, yet outdrive everyone. It’s rarely raw strength. It’s sequencing, and sequencing starts with a stable base.

Your Number One Priority

Setup isn’t a formality before the “real” swing starts – it’s the foundation the entire swing stands on. Grip, alignment, ball position, all secondary if your pressure is already in the wrong place before you take the club back.

So before you worry about tempo or where the club is at the top, check this first: where is your pressure sitting at address? Feel it through the middle of your foot – not your toes, not your heels – centered and athletic.

A Simple Way to Check Yourself

On the range, take your normal setup, then rock your weight gently forward and back until you feel where you naturally settle. Most players are surprised to find they’ve been leaning slightly toward their toes; or maybe more pressure on the lead or the trail foot. Settle into the middle of your feet, so you could be tapped from any direction without losing balance. Hold that feeling, then swing from there.

Setup is everything. Start there, every time.
